Ferritin Blood Test
Check ferritin levels to assess iron stores, iron deficiency and eligibility for blood donation.
Service Description
Our Ferritin Blood Test measures ferritin, the main protein responsible for storing iron in the body. Ferritin levels can provide important insight into your iron reserves and may help identify low iron stores or iron overload. This test is commonly used for those who regularly donate blood or use the blood transfusion service, as frequent blood donation can sometimes reduce iron stores over time. It may also be useful if you experience symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, dizziness, shortness of breath, poor exercise tolerance or hair thinning. Low ferritin levels may indicate depleted iron stores even before anaemia develops. Elevated ferritin can sometimes occur due to inflammation, liver conditions, iron overload or other underlying health issues. No fasting is required for this test, although morning testing may provide the most consistent results where possible. Most results are available within 1–2 working days. Please note: Ferritin is best interpreted alongside other markers such as Full Blood Count, Iron, Transferrin Saturation and CRP in certain situations. Our Iron Status Blood Test will give a better overview of Iron markers.
