The Lyme Disease Blood Test measures IgG and IgM antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria associated with Lyme disease. This test may be helpful for people who have experienced a tick bite or symptoms that could be associated with Lyme disease, particularly following time spent in woodland, grassy areas or other places where ticks may be present. Symptoms can vary but may include: - A circular or spreading rash - Unexplained fatigue - Fever or flu-like symptoms - Muscle or joint pain - Headaches - Nerve-related symptoms What does the test measure? Borrelia burgdorferi IgM antibodies – may appear during the earlier stages of infection. Borrelia burgdorferi IgG antibodies – generally develop later and may remain detectable following a previous infection. Important limitations: Lyme disease antibody testing must be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history and possible exposure to ticks. Antibodies can take several weeks to develop. Testing too soon after a tick bite or the onset of symptoms may produce a negative result even when infection is present. A positive result does not necessarily confirm a current or active infection. IgG antibodies can remain detectable for months or years following a previous infection or treatment. IgM results can sometimes be non-specific and false-positive or cross-reactive results may occur. This test detects your immune system’s antibody response rather than detecting the bacteria directly. Antibody levels should not be used to assess whether treatment has been successful, as they may remain positive after the infection has resolved. A negative result does not completely exclude Lyme disease where there is a strong clinical suspicion. If you have developed a characteristic spreading “bull’s-eye” rash following a possible tick bite, you should seek medical advice promptly. Lyme disease may be diagnosed clinically in this situation and treatment should not be delayed while awaiting blood-test results. Turnaround Time: Most results available in 3-4 working days.
