Service Description

Our STI Urine Test is a comprehensive screening panel designed to detect a range of common sexually transmitted infections using a urine sample. This test may be useful if you have symptoms, a new sexual partner, unprotected sex or simply want reassurance regarding your sexual health. This panel screens for: Chlamydia trachomatis Neisseria gonorrhoeae Syphilis (presence in lesion or urine) Herpes Simplex I (HSV-1) Herpes Simplex II (HSV-2) Trichomonas Vaginalis Mycoplasma Hominis Mycoplasma Genitalium Ureaplasma Urelyticum Chancroid Important pre-testing information: Please avoid urinating for at least 1–2 hours before your appointment, as this can improve detection accuracy. First-catch urine (the first part of the urine stream) is preferred. Testing too soon after exposure may reduce accuracy, as some infections require a window period before they become detectable. PLEASE NOTE: While urine PCR testing is highly accurate for many infections, certain sexually transmitted infections may sometimes require alternative sample types for gold standard testing. For example: - Active herpes lesions are most accurately tested using a direct lesion swab. - Syphilis is most commonly diagnosed using blood antibody testing, particularly in later stages of infection. - Some throat or rectal infections may not be detected on urine testing alone and may require site-specific swabs where relevant. This test does not include HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C screening. These are available separately through our STI Blood Test. Results are typically available within 2–3 working days. All testing is carried out confidentially and results are provided securely by email. Please note that The Health Lab does not provide prescriptions or treatment directly. If treatment or follow-up is required, we can direct you to appropriate healthcare providers, including online GP services through our partners at EirDoc.
